Back nearly a week now and washing and ironing all done. While watching Jane McDonald cruising Oz I was reminded of your blog and decided to have a look. It made an interesting read you certainly made much more of the on board activities than we did. I am sorry I didn't make more use of what was on offer, although I did keep some of the weight off by regular trips to the gym. You gave a much more favourable review of Fuerteventura than I would have done. The long walk along the quayside was exhausting for Dave and we only got as far as the nearest bar where we sat outside shivering over a coffee. Still it's unfair to blame the island for its weather, apparently Fuerteventura is renowned for strong winds. Our highlights were visiting Madeira and Lisbon, Madeira had really taken Xmas on board from the Natiivity displays and decorations to the beautiful young girls in National dress. We had a weeks holiday in Funchal many years ago before David's stroke and did the cable car and toboggan run then so it wasn't so bad not being able to do it this time. We have also been to Lisbon before and enjoyed the city's architecture, shopping and restaurants. On our last visit only a few years ago we took a tram excursion and due to an accident ahead we were forced to walk down a very steep road it took Dave ages to get to the bottom even with my help. On reflection we would not choose a winter cruise to The Canaries, last Xmas in The Caribbean was so good that perhaps I was expecting too much from this cruise and I certainly didn't do any necessary research or the weather wouldn't have been such a surprise. There were many good elements to the cruise, we had charming dinner companions and of course excellent company at the 8pm quiz. This is the first time I have ever opened someone's blog let alone made a comment so please forgive me if I have waffled on too much. Carolyn and Dave
Lovely to hear from you both! I think Fuerteventura could be interesting in fine spring weather, but I wouldn’t make the journey on the off chance, Martyn is still quite poorly with a gut bug acquired on board, and I’m coughing and sniffling as usual. Keeping an open mind about cruises: I’d like to see the fjords, but will suspend judgment until we’re better and the weather is more encouraging.
